Cryostorage containers make it possible to transport and store liquid nitrogen safely for extended periods of time. I had recently been working with a lab outside of San Jose who specialize in the storage and transport of human cells. This was not my typical laboratory product request, but it sparked my interest in learning about the applications and the challenges that go with the handling of liquid nitrogen. First things first, as I’m sure most of you know, you don’t want to be handling this stuff without protective equipment. Liquid nitrogen boils at −196 °C (77 K; −321 °F) and is a cryogenic fluid which can cause rapid freezing on contact with living tissue. In doing my homework for creating this blog, I learned that Liquid nitrogen can easily be converted to a solid by placing it in a vacuum chamber, pumped with a rotary vacuum pump. I also learned about the many uses, but let me get back to the topic of liquid nitrogen storage and the characteristics of these containers. First of all, storage capacities range on the average from 1 to 50 Liters. You also have to take into consideration the evaporation rate which range from 0.15 – 0.49 liters per day based on the size of the container.
In addition to purchasing a Liquid Dewar, it is highly recommended you also purchase accessories like the pouring spout and where appropriate, a pressurized transfer device, which provides protection for instruments with pressure inputs like pressure guages and switches. The device seperates the gas steam or liquid to be measure from the sensing element of the instrument connected.

- as a coolant to increase the sensitivity of infrared homing seeker heads of missiles such as the Strela 3
